Freud wonders how religions function in society, and sees in religion a kind of generous, selfless love – at least, this love as an ideal. He wonders how these forces are manifest on the social level.įreud’s essay moves organically – that is, not in a strict order, but by association of related ideas. Freud isolates the individual’s ego, superego, and id – the self, the regulating self, and deep, base desires – as the three forces inherent on the personal level. Freud attempts, in his essay, to understand how people relate to their societies, how societies are formed, and how individual psychic forces interact with larger, group-level forces. Freud believes that religion is central to how societies function – even societies that no longer consist of orthodox believers. Sigmund Freud begins his long essay, Civilization and Its Discontents, by describing his inability to understand what he calls “religious feeling.” Freud is not religious himself, though he has good friends who are. "Death Row Doorbell" - 3/5 The remaining family members of a gang killing are haunted by the ringleader, begging for their forgiveness. I thought, at first, that they had something to do with the crime committed, but then couldn't find a pattern. Wonderful and creative idea, but I wish the poses had been explained a little more. It's gradually revealed that they're drawn to spots of guilt and shame. "Earthbound" - 5/5 On day in Japan, people start to become cemented to a particular spot in strange poses. "Roar" - 3/5 Two hikers find a ghost flood, where the disastrous dam burst is recreated every day, and the man who is obsessed with it. Great twist that they're tickling everyone, and wonderful ending: they achieve world domination. "Ghosts of Prime Time" - 4/5 I actually really liked this one! A very strange comedy duo uses their spirits to ensure that they always kill. "Bloodsucking Darkness" - 3/5 A young woman develops an eating disorder after a breakup, and a student from her school decides to use his pet vampire bats to feed her while she sleeps. "Ghosts of Prime Time," "Death Row Doorbell," and "Earthbound" are also inventive and wonderful. Sometimes bad things just keep happening, and the villains win.Īnd Ito is ridiculously creative and original I had no idea what "Smashed," the title story, would be, but it was unexpected and great. What I love about Ito's stories is that there isn't always a happy ending. The first time was a surprise and they were concerned, but once I reassured them, the subsequent times they giggled or shook their heads with a smirk on their face. My boys would come in to check on me as I was exercising and find me sitting on my bike, still exercising, but sniffling. The pain is the same whether you’re reading it or someone else is reading it to you. I should have been prepared considering I had read it before, but no, I still blubbered like a baby. Listening to the audio of Heaven and Hell was EMOTIONAL. I cried - on my exercise bike, in the kitchen baking cookies and sitting on my bed playing Solitaire. When you’ve been through hell it’s easy to recognise heaven. I wonder if Sam's secret work was the same as Lucas Starks? Hmmmm.? I think this is because, after half a million re-reads (slight exaggeration) I'm finally toughening up. Miracle of miracles, I didn't cry this time. ***Re-read number 500 001 (slight exaggeration)*** While posting the sign, Cimorene encounters a wizard.
