Separation-individuation is the process of understanding the self as apart from the mother (or more broadly, the caregiver). It’s as if Brown anticipated the concept of “separation-individuation,” first developed by child psychiatrist Margaret Mahler in the 1960s. The bunny may be narrating, but he or she (the gender is unnamed too, of course) expresses no self-consciousness. The bunny looks directly at the reader, and the “great green room” would be so expansively “great” only because the narrator is so small.īut such are the insights of children: unlike my daughter, I had never noticed that the bunny only appears in Clement Hurd’s illustrations, never in Brown’s words. The story in Goodnight Moon, as in all great picture books, comes not so much from an “illustration” of words or pictures with captions, but from an artistic interplay of words and images, and on the first page it is clear that the little bunny is the narrator. ![]() ![]() “The book never talks about the little bunny.” AFTER THE ZILLIONTH TIME I recited the final, softly padded couplet of Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown, “Goodnight stars / goodnight air / goodnight noises everywhere,” my daughter spoke up: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Originally a Phoenician pictogram representing a leg with a hand, and denoting a sound similar to the Y in “yes,” I was later adopted by Semitic groups to describe the word “arm” which, in Semitic languages, began with a J (also possessing the same Y sound as in “yes”). J’s phonetic quest for independence probably began with the sound of the letter I. (A story for another day: the name of the dot over the “j” and “i,” and why we use them.) Are J and I related? With the introduction of lowercase letters to the Roman numeric system, J was commonly used to denote the conclusion of a series of ones-as in “xiij” for the number 13. The letter J began as a swash, a typographical embellishment for the already existing I. It is no coincidence that I and J stand side by side-they actually started out as the same character. J is a bit of a late bloomer after all, it was the last letter added to the alphabet. From its humble beginnings as a Roman numeral to its eventual tenth position in the English alphabet, J has had quite a linguistic journey. ![]() ![]() I do like Agnes’ approach to it.Įvie’s introduction to her fellow students made me think of the scene in The Little Princess (an adaptation of a book by Frances Hodgson Burnett) when the news of her father’s death hits home to Shirley Temple’s character, Sarah.
